Pro-Medica Diagnostic Laboratory Services Ltd was inaugurated on 1st July 1996 to serve the Mauritian Public and the Medical Fraternity with a comprehensive diagnostic pathology service. Whether it is for a routine medical checkup, finding the cause( diagnosis) of a patient’s complaint, or for the purpose of monitoring a prescribed treatment, we aim to offer a reliable, accurate and rapid service.
Our head office is situated in the Medical Centre of Labourdonnais Court in Port Louis, and comprises of our administrative and technical divisions. In addition we have several branches of our laboratory (collection points) in Plaine Verte, Port Louis, Pailles, Triolet, Riverside Riviere du Rempart Commercial Centre, and in early 2012, Nexteracom Tower 3 Medical Centre in Ebene. The aim of these branches is to be in proximity of our clients. No laboratory tests are carried out on these sites, but samples are collected from them and transported in appropriate cool containers for analysis at the head office.
Our head office and all our branches open at 7.30am (Monday to Saturday) to allow for blood taking for those who are fasting and who can call at our premises prior to attending their occupation. The majority of our results are available on the same day and can be transmitted by fax or email on demand. We are closed on Sundays and Public Holidays.
Our philosophy is to ensure that every patient gets a courteous, reliable service. Every abnormal result is automatically repeated without incurring any extra charge to the patient.
We adhere closely to business ethics and good governance. In this respect, we do not offer any commission or incentive to prescribing doctors or any other individual who refer patients to us. Instead we prefer to offer discounts to our patients. In addition, we refuse categorically to falsify receipts even when requested by individuals for the purpose of Insurance claims. Who we are? Our laboratory has now established itself a place amongst the best laboratories in Mauritius, with 15 years of laboratory service. We practice according to international norms with quality assurance in all our analyses. We subscribe to recognized external quality assurance programs (EQAS), as well as running in-house quality controls for all the tests we undertake. Our equipment are calibrated and checked every day. With these tools and procedures, we are able to provide and ensure consistently accurate results.
Our equipment are mainly of European origin and are almost similar to those of the other reputable local laboratories. We have service contracts with local suppliers for the maintenance of our equipment.
Our Laboratory is currently seeking Accreditation for ISO 15189 with MAURITAS.
Our staff are trained in house and are regularly monitored for the accuracy of their work. The administrative and Business matters are undertaken by Ms Vandana Vaghjee. The overall Management and the Scientific and Technical matters are under the responsibility of Mr. Ibrahim Sheik-Yousouf, a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, UK.

The Management Our Partners We aim to provide a one-stop service to all our patients. We therefore have the collaboration of several other laboratories for certain tests we cannot undertake in our laboratory.
Microbiological cultures are done at the Medical Laboratory of Mr. A.S. Lalloo in Quatre-Bornes. Biopsies and fine needle aspirates are sent to Dr. P. Oogarah, a UK Qualified Pathologist. We occasionally use the laboratory service of Clinique de Lorette for some esoteric tests. We refer very few tests to the Central Health Laboratory in Candos (Hb and protein electrophoresis, confirmation of HIV and Hepatitis).
On demand, we refer samples of Blood Lead Level, Viral Loads for HIV and Hepatitis C and other rare tests to Path Care Laboratory in Cape Town, South Africa.
Our foreign partners include Omega Diagnostics and Cambridge Nutritional Sciences UK, from whom we obtain most of our rapid diagnostic kits and our kits for the detection of Food Intolerance respectively.
